With phase one of the new stand set to be complete in January and phase two set to take Anfield capacity to approximately 58,800, the news from the owners is concerning for future plans and increased fan access. Phase two has always been contingent on phase one being complete and receiving the green light from owners based on the feasibility of the project.

Recent protests over raised ticket prices is cause for concern for owner John W. Henry. Expansion plans rest heavily on increased revenue from tickets, though this was always going to be a sticky situation for the club. The merits of fan protests and owner actions are both clear to see, but let’s hope the expansion pushes ahead either way.

How Both Sides of the Ticket Price Debate Stack Up

Owners
From an owners perspective it’s clear to see how increasing ticket revenue can benefit the club. Expansion, deeper pockets for player signings and building infrastructure that benefits future generations of fans and players are all great reasons behind higher ticket prices. But from a fan’s perspective the picture is less colourful.

Fans Problems with Higher Ticket Prices

At the heart of the issue is access. Liverpool ticket prices are set to increase across 75% of seats, however only one stand will have improved views, the rest will remain unchanged. Liverpool is home to some of the poorest boroughs in England and inflation has been close to zero for the last year, meaning price rises aren’t in line with the rest of the economy’s performance. The cheapest season tickets would be the fourth most expensive in the league and the cheapest game day ticket would be the third most expensive in the league.

The owners and fans have two things in common; they both want to see the club succeed and they both want to secure that success for the future. Expanding Anfield is a long-term play that will help to achieve both of these things, it’s just up to the owners in terms of how they want to make it happen. Fingers crossed both sides can come out on top.

The ticket hike is certainly a gamble to be sure, but hopefully it pays off for the team and fans alike.

I do not think that raising ticket prices is the way to go. Expanding the fan base is a better course of action.

There has to be a balance between ticket prices that are priced to allow profits but also priced to allow fans to access with a degree of reasonableness. Your fans can make or break you , it's vital to remember this when setting that price point.

Raising ticket prices could put the team at risk of losing already loyal fans and lowers the potential of attaining new fans. An increase in prices would deflate potential attendees likelihood to purchase tickets when there are other prospective teams looking to increase fan base at a more competitive price.

I hope their expansion plans benefit all involved. Hopefully they will come to an agreement on how ticket increase will benefit the club. Maybe the tickets should be only increased to 50% instead of 75%. Since this is a long-term play it might still work.

I felicitate to John W. Henry because you explained why you had increased ticket price. This is good sign. You shouldn't be worried on temporarily protest.

That much of an increase? I don't think that was the best option, maybe a smaller increase along with another course of action.

I don't think it's a great idea to increase ticket prices. I'm sure people that are really dedicated to watching won't mind but this is a way to lose alot of customers.
