Liverpool Solid But Missed Opportunities Hurt

Tottenham Stadium
Liverpool were solid, showed potential, but failed to capitalize on a chance to snatch victory away at Tottenham. Spurs fans would have rejoiced with a late equalizer and another great save to deny Liverpool victory, but it was a tight match between two top-4 contenders that produced a fair result, which leaves Liverpool on four points from three outings.

The result could have been very different. The result, 1-1, also suggests some solid defensive efforts. Some strong points included a good passing game and the creation of chances in front of goal, but it is the conversion of these chances that will define a campaign. Coutinho‘s miss early in the first half, a poorly timed pass from Wijnaldum which meant that Adam Lallana was called for offside, also denied Liverpool a great potential goal on the counter-attack. There were several of these that could have ended differently throughout the match for Liverpool.

Klopp was philosophical about the match, stating that a draw away at White Hart Lane is normally a solid result, however he didn’t shy away from the obvious fact that the three points were there for the taking.

The Friendliest of Friendlies for Liverpool During Break

Klopp and Wenger

Playing Behind Closed Doors

It’s the sort of behaviour you expect from sides training and playing in secret before a big tournament, but Jurgen Klopp has arranged for Liverpool to play Huddersfield Town behind closed doors during the international break.

The Terriers are managed by David Wagner, Klopp's close friend and the best man at his wedding. The two maintain a very close relationship, and after Huddersfield’s pre-season loss of 2-0 Wagner announced that there would be plenty more to come.

It makes good sense for both sides, as Liverpool needs to get players into form and bring back others from injury. Lucas Leiva is one of those, he has worked his way back with an under-23’s outing and a start from the bench against Spurs. Ragnar Klavan was injured last week and the coaches are set to use the friendly to get him back in top shape.

After an eyebrow raising loss to Burnley, fans have grown a bit restless and it’s not even September. Much of the concern has centered around players playing out of position, and this stems from a lack of cover in key roles. With fresh rumors that Mamadou Sakho might be loaned out for the season, some fans are left scratching their heads about what’s going on at Anfield HQ.

Liverpool Starts a Shaky Season

New season, new players, new coach, same old results. This has been the tone of criticism coming through after the Red’s 2-0 loss to Burnley. To a certain extent, the frustration is justified, but it’s very early in a new season to get too carried away. So what were the lessons from Liverpool’s opening round of the EPL?

Liverpool 2016

Jurgen Klopp's first off season in charge has led to the introduction of seven new player signings along with nine pre-season games played, with varying results, as we have already covered.

What is the plan for the new recruits?

Klopp has beefed up the side's options in goal, midfield, and center-back, while also adding a touch of pace and size in attack.

Sadio Mane is the main talking point for a lot of writers and critics, with most believing he will be an excellent fit for the team. Liverpool paid a handsome price for Mane, however only time will tell if the 24-year-old is worth the investment.

Liverpool’s Weekend of Contrasting Fortunes: Barcelona and Mainz 05

Liverpool Barcelona

The Reds' pre-season has served up a few lessons, some surprises, and a fair share of disappointments. Fortunately, these are all friendly matches, free of the grandiose atmosphere of the International Champions Cup title. In the last weekend Liverpool has traveled from the biggest stage in UK football, Wembley, where they played the biggest opponent in world football to Germany, where they played a much lesser known and far less daunting opponent.

To the uninitiated, these two match-ups might present a set of very predictable outcomes. In reality, as is often the case with Liverpool F.C., the complete opposite occurred. The Reds handed out a 4-0 thumping of Barca and suffered an equally comprehensive 4-0 defeat at the hands of the lowly Mainz 05.

A Disappointing End to the U.S. Tour

Liverpool team
Klopp named a strong side to play in the final game of his team’s U.S. tour, but ultimately it was a disappointing end to the trip, although a tight and positive match. The game was played in St Louis, Missouri, at the home of the Cardinals baseball team. The pitch lay awkwardly across the center of the ground, cut halfway into the baseball diamond, but the weather (although very humid) and the ground were top quality. It was more a case of failings in front of the goal, a lack of concentration in hot weather and a fatiguing itinerary that perhaps ultimately cost the Reds.

The powerful line-up included Wijnaldum, Mane, Sturridge, Firmino and Emre Can. The first half was exciting end-to-end football, and after falling behind 1-0 Liverpool equalized through a deft header from Dejan Lovren, for Sheyi Ojo to finish off from a well-struck James Milner corner kick. Klopp used the second half to swap the entire side, leaving just Wijnaldum on the pitch and using all but one of his reserves.

Liverpool in the US
As the end of the pre-season draws towards a close, the quality of the opponents has stepped up a level too. Liverpool has played Chelsea and AC Milan in recent days, with both games providing insight into the form of players, combinations and squad depth. At the risk of sounding like a coach, this time of year is not just about winning, but testing out players, formations and combinations. The last few weeks have been very interesting in that regard for Klopp and co.
